When can your spouse work?

A spousal open work permit is not automatic just because someone studies or works in Canada. Eligibility depends on the principal applicant’s program, occupation, and status.

If your spouse studies

Spousal open work permit eligibility currently focuses on students in eligible programs, including certain master’s programs of 16 months or longer, doctoral programs, and some professional degrees.

Do not choose a program simply because someone told you it automatically gives your spouse a work permit. Check the exact program and current rules before paying tuition.

If your spouse works

A spouse may qualify when the principal worker meets the current occupation, permit-type, and remaining-validity requirements.

Eligible groups include TEER 0, TEER 1, and selected TEER 2 and 3 occupations.
